Traffic chaos

KARACHI: Road construction in Karachi that began at the start of the year has mostly been completed, much of it providing relief from the chaotic traffic condition. However, the construction of the Drigh Road underpass is still under way with no sign of completion in the near future.

According to a recent news report, the underpass will be inaugurated by the chief minister on July 20th. But considering the current state of the construction, it is highly unlikely that the underpass will be completed within 10 days.

Currently, the traffic situation only seems to worsen with no wardens present in the area to divert movement for a smooth flow of traffic. On Monday July 10th, the traffic in the area was held up to five hours. There is literally no exaggeration in this sentence. That in itself is a flabbergasting and stressing situation, considering that commuters waited for five-hours straight before they could reach their desired destinations. The traffic jam not only held up movement for commuters but ambulances also had to wait in line before traffic was dispersed. One can only imagine how difficult the situation would have been for them.

Of course, once completed the Drigh Road underpass will help ease the traffic situation in the metropolis, but the question is when. How much more time is needed to complete the underpass? And till then, why are traffic wardens not stationed along the road?
