Billionaire inventor and CEO of Tesla Elon Musk unveiled the first production unit of the ultra-anticipated Model 3, posting two pictures of the upcoming vehicle on his Twitter account on Saturday.

Tesla revenues surge as it ramps for Model 3 launch

The new vehicle follows a similar design language as Tesla’s previous models and will feature an upgrade to the company’s popular autonomous driving Autopilot functionality.

Musk is apparently also owner the first production Model 3 after the customer who placed the first deposit on the vehicle gave his spot to the CEO. "Ira Ehrenpreis had rights to 1st car as he was 1st to place a full deposit, but gave those rights to me as my 46th bday present. Tks Ira!" said Musk on his twitter account.

About 30 Model 3 customers will receive their cars at a party on July 28. Production is expected to grow to 100 cars in August, more than 1,500 by September, and then 20,000 by December.

Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in March last year and began taking $1,000 deposits for the car shortly after. Within a week, the electric-car company had racked up 325,000 pre-orders. The company has taken some 400,000 pre-orders since then.
