Crimes rate in June surges by 13.37% in Lahore

Average of 31 criminal cases were reported daily in the provincial capital

LAHORE: Over 941 incidents of crimes ie an average of 31 cases of robberies, burglaries, theft, car-lifting/snatching and motorcycle-lifting/snatching were reported daily in June. A comparison of crime data showed a surge of 13.37% when compared to May.

A man was shot dead and five others were injured for offering resistance during robbery bid. Two suspected robbers and a suspect accused of rape-cum-murder case were killed in ‘encounters’.

In May 830 such incident had occurred. An 18% increase in robberies, 24.44% in motorcycle-lifting/snatching and 11% increase in burglaries was witnessed in crime incident in June. However, incidents of car-lifting/snatching decreased by 17.24% and other vehicle lifting/snatching by 14.29%.

According to the data, 212 incidents of robberies took place in June and 179 in May, 443 motorcycle-lifting/snatching in June and 356 in May, 219 burglaries in June and 194 in May, 58 car-lifting/snatching in May and 48 in June and 21 incidents of other vehicle lifting were registered in May and 18 in June.



During these incidents, a man was shot dead and five others were injured while offering resistance. On June 24, a victim Imtiaz was shot dead in Defence A when he tried to apprehend a fleeing robber. The victim was settled in Canada and had come to Lahore to spend Eid with his parents.

A comparison of the data showed that Sadar Division as usual topped in crime incidents in June where at least 222 cases were registered in the month of June. The crime surged by 10.45% as 201 incidents were registered in May.

As many as 34 incidents of robbery, 14 car-lifting/snatching, 92 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, 79 burglaries and three cases of other vehicle lifting/snatching were reported.

Sadar division was followed by Cantonment Division where over 203 incidents of crime against property were reported. Crime increased by 19.41% as 170 cases were registered in May. The cases included 40 incidents of robberies, seven car-lifting, 97 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, four other vehicle lifting/snatching and 55 burglary and theft cases.

‘Capital much safer than Washington DC’

In City Division, 159 cases were registered. The cases included 43 robberies, 10 car-lifting, 85 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, two other vehicle lifting and 19 burglaries. Crime rate increased by 17% as 136 cases were registered in May.

In Model Town division a total of 129 incidents of crime against property were registered. The cases included one burglary, 29 incidents of robberies, seven car-lifting, 56 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, three other vehicle lifting and 33 cases of burglaries and theft were registered. Crime increased by 12.17% as 115 cases were registered in May.

In Iqbal Town division 123 cases of crimes were reported. These cases included 29 robberies, six car-lifting/snatching, 67 motorcycle-lifting/snatching and 18 burglaries. Crime increased by 18.27% as 104 cases were registered in May.

In Civil Lines 105 criminal cases were registered. The cases included 37 incidents of robbery, four car-lifting, 46 motorcycle-lifting and 15 burglaries. Crime increased by 8.25% as 97 cases were registered in May.

When divisions are categorised according to percentage-increase, crime increased the most in Cantonment with 19.41%. Cantt was followed by Iqbal Town with 18.27%, City 17%, Model Town 12.17%, Sadar 10.45 % and Civil Lines 8.25%.
