ISLAMABAD:
Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Friday said that the upper house of parliament would play its due role in protecting the rights of the transgender community and work on the necessary legislation in this regard.
He expressed these views while meeting with a delegation of Task Force on Transgender at the Parliament House.
Rabbani said that the Senate had taken notice of an incident in which a person who is transgender was targeted and the matter was referred to the committee on marginalised segments with a view to look into the issues confronting the transgender community so that they could be brought into the mainstream.
In this regard, the Senate chairman said that a standing committee was in the process of formulating its recommendations for legislation to this effect.
He asked the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Marginalised Segments and the chairperson of the Taskforce on Transgenders to deliberate on the problems the transgender community was facing and take other stakeholders on board for necessary legislation, including a judgment of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the matter.
Rabbani further said that a comprehensive bill should be introduced in the Senate on the matter.
Representatives of the transgender community told Rabbani about the issues they face.
