Toxic realpolitik

Letter July 07, 2017
As a citizen of this country, I don’t want to experience another political breakdown leading to possible military coup

KARACHI: This is in response to the article published on July 6th titled ‘Politics of Panama leaks’ written by Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi. The article points out the unfortunate state of politics in Pakistan and how it is going to worsen with the verdict on Panama leaks.

In the article Mr Rizvi addresses the repercussion of the verdict, with neither being in favour of the democratic process of the country, putting the average reader into a state of stress. History is evidence that when a particular verdict doesn’t go in favour of a certain political party in Pakistan, members of the party take their frustration to streets, either through protests or violence. In either case, the average voter, who only voted in hopes of restoring peace and harmony, is left with the adverse instead.

As a citizen of this country, I don’t want to experience another political breakdown leading to a possible military coup. What exactly is it going to take for Pakistan’s politics to stay away from realpolitik and practise the true and classical form of politics?
