With processed food, devoid of substantive nutrients making up most of our metropolitan diets, it is no surprise that we suffer from deficiencies, skin problems, hair-fall and often feel unreasonably lethargic. After all, you are what you eat. Quoting proverbial wisdom, food is indispensable to not just our health but the progress of our mental and physical faculties.

Compiled from eatthis, here is a list of nutrient rich food superstars that are essential to making up for all the nutrients lost in our 'fast food' appetites - and gain the fittest body and mind you've been itching for.

1) Spinach

It may be green and leafy, but paalak is no nutritional wallflower. This muscle builder is a rich source of plant-based omega-3s and folate, which help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis. Not jut that but its just what the doctor ordered for weight loss and a toned physique. Folate also helps to protect you against age-related sexual issues. Aim for one cup fresh spinach or 1/2 cup cooked per day. So the next time you see paalak paneer on the menu, you know what to order!

2) Yogurt

dahi

Fortunately for Pakistanis, we have the option of getting the organically cultured, fresh yoghurt, instead of the packed and preserved varieties. The unlimited benefits of dahi are undeniable. Not only does this home staple catalyse the bacteria in your body but also keeps your skin fresh, hair vibrant and immune system in mint condition. Plus, it gives your body the calcium boost it needs for a power-packed workout.

3) Tomatoes

Tomatoes too are good for the skin and rich in lypoicene that fights skin, lung and bladder cancer. And good news: processed or stored tomatoes are just as nutrient rich as fresh ones because its easy for our body to break down lycopene. More excuses to down your mum's tamatar gosht minus the guilt! Just tell her to take it easy on the oil!

4) Carrots

These gems are not just terrific for your eyesight but are packed with carotenoids-fat soluble compounds that fight cancer and arthiritis. They fill you up too, which means you end up consuming less calories! So the next time you are served gaajar ka halwa, you have a reason to feast on it - but not if you're battling the bulge, please! If you want to slip into your skinny jeans this summer, opt for raw or steamed gaajar!

5) Black beans

 6) Walnuts

Loaded with tonnes of muscle-building proteins and omega-3s, these dry fruits are super heroes. If you are on a strict work out regimen or struggling with losing your love handles, walnuts should be the key food item that you NEED to consume! So you are lucky if your grandma makes you the desi dessert called panjeeri which is crammed in proteins, and if you don't know what this nutritious delicacy is, look it up now - but stick to small portions! If you think its way too heavy for your liking, stick to raw aakhrot and score the body (and mind) of your dreams already!
