PESHAWAR: Despite tall claims of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government of record work and improvement in the education sector, not a single student from government schools found their way into the top spots in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations – exemplifying the gap between public and private schools.

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Peshawar on Wednesday announced the annual results of SSC exams. The board said 149,212 students appeared in the exams as private and regular candidates, of which 65 per cent were successful.

A total of 76,747 students appeared as regular and private candidates for class IX exams of which 44,853 were declared as successful with a pass percentage of 58.44 per cent.

Similarly, a total of 72,467 students appeared in the class X exams as regular and private candidates. Of these, 52,672 passed their exams with an overall pass percentage of 72.68 per cent.

However, students from the government schools failed to secure any position in the top ten.

In the science group, Umar Anwar from the Frontier Scouts Cadet College in Warsak secured the stop spot after obtaining 1,048 marks out of a maximum 1,100 marks.

Similarly, Jalwa Akbar from the Peshawar Model School in Charsadda and Karishma Basir of the Frontier Science Academy in Hayatabad secured 1,047 and 1,045 marks respectively, taking the second and third spots.

In the humanities group, Hafiza Ayesha of Iqra Huffaz Secondary School and College for Girls secured 1,001 marks and clinched first place. Hafsa Ali and Hafiza Huda Habib from the same institute took second and third place respectively after securing 977 and 990 marks.

Anwar, while talking to The Express Tribune said that today was the happiest day of his life since he had worked very hard for his position.

He said that without hard work, a person cannot achieve their goal.

K-P Assembly Deputy Speaker Meher Taj Roghani congratulated the position holders, their parents and heads of different educational institutions.

She added that education and health were the main priority of the government and that they had been trying to improve these sectors from the first day.

In this regards, she highlighted several initiatives which the K-P government had taken in the education sector to boost the standard of education such as the record amount of funds allocated for education.

She hoped that by the end of the incumbent government’s term, people will see a marked change in public schools.

Earlier, BISE Peshawar Chairman Professor Dr Fazlur Rehman congratulated the successful candidates.

He said that for the first time, the board had tested the new system of sending result through short messages (SMS) to the phones of the candidates.

Moreover, an online system had been launched to facilitate students wishing to apply for re-totalling, rechecking and getting documents.

Later, the position holders were awarded.
