All set for Amateur Golf Championship

Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan players are in town to compete

KARACHI: Some of the top local golfers as well as competitors from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will showcase their talent at the 56th Amateur Golf Championship when the event tees off at Defence Authority Country and Golf Club (DACGC) from Thursday.

The four-day championship, which will feature amateurs, ladies and seniors, is expected to produce some enthralling contests, thanks to a healthy mix of local and foreign players and challenging weather conditions at the windswept DACGC course.

Brig Nayyar Afzal, the secretary of Pakistan Golf Federation (PGF), revealed that the federation had sent out tournament invitations to a total of 22 countries, out of which the aforementioned duo kept their promise and sent their golfers. “Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Jordan and Afghanistan had also confirmed their participation but later opted out, so now we have top players from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,” he told The Express Tribune.

Afzal further said that India, who had participated in the same event earlier, opted to stay away because of political reasons.



The top contenders for the title among national players are thought to be Ghazanfar Mehmood, Muhammad Rehman, Taimur Khan, Ahmed Baig and Zohaib Asif.

PGF officials are confident that their players will impress and hold their own against international rivals, whereas Colonel Zahid Iqbal, the DACGC captain, gave the club’s course five stars, claiming it is in pristine condition.

Running concurrently with the main championship will be the National Senior Championship of Pakistan, which will serve as trials for the national senior team for the upcoming Asia Pacific Senor Golf tournament.
