SWABI: A technician of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) was killed in a gun attack in Swabi while he was returning from work on Saturday.

Police said Sohail Ahmed, who belonged to Kalu Khan village, was posted by the health department in Narnji village, which borders Buner district.

He was returning from the village hospital when some men gunned him down and escaped.

Police reached the scene, cordoned it off and took the body into custody. A search operation was also conducted but no arrests were made by the time this report was filed.

Khan had earlier worked at Rescue 1122 and later joined the health department as an EPI technician.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa health department tweeted a condolence message:

Several killings of health workers have been reported from tribal belt, KPK and also karachi Pakhtun populated areas. These unfortunate incidents sparked after the Abbottabad Saga orchestrated by Dr. Shakeel Afridi. Neither Islamabad nor the provincial government of KPK and the tribal heads have succeeded in their efforts to gain trust of the Pashtun people on the government sponsored immunization programme. The authorities must look for other options for the programme rather sending the vaccination team to villages AND collect their dead bodies from the roadside. One option could be immunization of children at a central place of the village in presence of the local leadership, MNAs, MPAs and the tribal heads under the security of Pakistan Army.
