LAHORE: Intercity bus terminals and railways station remained overcrowded with passengers returning to the metropolis after spending Eidul Fitr holidays in their native towns.

The metropolis also witnessed traffic jams at the entry points of the city, especially on Multan Road, Band Road and Ravi Bridge.

It caused great inconvenience to passengers who wanted to reach their homes in the provincial capital.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Abdul Rehman, a student of a private technology institute, said he expected large crowds after Eid holidays and booked his return ticket before at a slightly higher price in anticipation. “I paid extra money to a ticket clerk at a private bus terminal in Lahore just to avoid inconvenience after Eid holidays. Despite having confirmed tickets and reaching the bus terminal on time, passengers had to face hardships while returning to Lahore due to the traffic jams,” he said.

Another passenger at Niazi Bus Terminal, Waheed Jutt, said after waiting for almost three hours at Arifwala Bus Terminal, he got a chance to board a Lahore-bound bus. He complained that most bus operators in his area were overcharging passengers but authorities were busy enjoying Eid holidays and had left passengers at the mercy of transporters.

Waheed said transporters were charging 40% to 50% higher than the original fare and passengers were forced to pay the extra money to get a ticket. “We cannot reach to our job timely if we do not pay the extra money. Transporters had teamed up and formed a ‘cartel’ against passengers who are in a hurry to reach their homes in the city,” he said.
