Unskilled PhDs

Letter June 24, 2017
In support of Amin Naim's views

ISLAMABAD: This is in response to the article “Larger dimensions” published on June 19th, written by Amin Jan Naim. Before reading the article, I had recently asked a friend of mine that how come after Professor Abdus Salam no one in the subjects of science has ever been nominated from Pakistan for any international award, considering so many PhDs are being churned out every year? His blunt and honest answer was that our PhDs are mediocre with equally average teachers and supervisors, who oversee their academic work. Secondly, there is hardly any original research and mostly it is paraphrased from overseas papers and sources. Thirdly, these so-called PhDs don’t keep themselves updated with the rapid advancements in science and technical subjects. Mr Naim’s article explains this aspect brilliantly. I completely support his point of view.
