Pakistanis turn to proxy sites to reach Facebook

KARACHI: With the temporary ban of Facebook in place across Pakistan, web-savvy locals are turning to proxy websites which allow them to bypass the ban and access the social networking site.

According to some messages being circulated by users on Twitter, sites such as http://www.facebookproxy.co.uk/ http://www.faceoxy.com/ and http://www.facebookproxy.net/ among others are being used to access Facebook.

According to web experts, it is impossible for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority to block the thousands of proxy sites available on the internet, making the ban a symbolic gesture.

In computer networks, a proxy server is a server which clients use to access other computers.

Report blasphemous caricatures:

Ministry of IT has directed the PTA to remain alert and watchful and block all links displaying profane caricatures immediately.

Ministry of IT has requested public at large to contact a dedicated Telephone No 0800-5505 and e-mail address: complaint@pta.gov.pk , to transmit necessary information, should anything to the effect of objectionable caricature get displayed/propagated at any website.

rabi | 14 years ago | Reply I don't think this temporary ban is a solution....we are just closing our eyes and saying all is well...according to me we shouldn't have banned it but we should convinced them through logics and proof that Islam is a religion of peace...as we guys don't want to hurt anyone's sentiments in the same manner no should hurt our sentiments but blocking the site is a foolish act becoz it wouldn't effect them. People are still using facebook through proxies becoz it connects people. Lots of my friends are also using it and if the ban was not lifted within a week maybe i'll also use facebook through proxy websites becoz i'm habitual of using facebook. It connects me with my family, my cousins and my friends....as the page has been removed so now i think the ban should be lifted.

And after facebook,PTA also blocked Youtube,Metacafe and many other social networking and entertainment sites.Also alot of proxy sites. My concern is over the hypocrisy of PTA and Government of Pakistan and also the courts, who have so far failed to take notice of the rampant pornographic material easily accessible on the internet. I say you want to show love to the religion and Prophet, then ban all pornographic websites!

That's because we are a hypocrite nation. Even in protests you can find happy faces burning tyres with anti America placards. Its difficult to find what's in our hearts.

But noone else could access facebook so i decided to leave it and instead try bebo (which actually turned out alot better then facebook itself) ;)

The ban against facebook deamge the image of pakistan in the world ya ! i agree that what they did is very wrong they hurt our relegious emotions and we have a right to show our anger but we shuld also follow the message of Prophet which is forgiveness and tolerance.. our rallys , our bans will not make any difference on them and when they ask forgiveness through media , the issue has been finished there.. by blocking facebook , myspace , wikipedia and youtube we are disconnected from the top most sites of the internet which connects us from the whole world !!! Hope that govt bans would be taken back in few days otherwise i am worried aboout the image of Pakistan. We should bycott , we should raise the voice which is our right but in a way that make difference , this act make us fool in front of them !!

For example, in past when drawings of holy prophet (PHUH) were made or an information page about Muhammad on Wikipedia included his pictures (Nauzubillah), nothing was done. There were individual efforts or protests from Muslims around the world but nothing happened. I agree that this temporary ban on facebook is not a solution but i would take it as a Honest Protest to give a message that WE HATE SUCH ACTS. The proper solution is to make an international resolution where it should be prohibited to draw and publish the pictures of anyone that can make people emotionally aggressive. Just closing your eyes is not the right way. Yes, we have a choice to accept or ignore something wrong. But, if something is wrong then why not fix it than just ignoring it? Many girls and boys would be in problem because they would not be able to chat for few days on facebook. Family persons can definiely use other chat tools like MSN, Yahoo etc. to talk, video chat or sharing anything with each other. So, no one need to worry too much about it.

However what intrigues me is among all the millions of Muslims in the world Pakistan appears to be the only country that has responded by banning Facebook. Mubarak. | 14 years ago | Reply 1- Freedom of expression is everybody's right. 2- But if somebody intentionally or unintentionally gets hurt then it should stop right there. 3- Respect of EVERY religious figure must be excercised at the same time no matter what religion he/she belongs to and there must be a code of conduct too. 4- There are societies which are pole apart in their attitudes and social/ religious beliefs. For a cartoonist, it may not be a serious thing to draw a religious figure but at the same time it could be a very serious matter for the follower of that religion. This thing must be considered at all times. 5- "Give Respect & Get Respect" is the golden rule which must be followed while excercising freedom of expression. 6- A Muslim cannot be disrespectful, in any case, to any other religion of the world because he believes in all the Prophets of God. 7- We have banned facebook, just to show, that this freedom of expression is not liked by us and is blasphemous. (it would be blasphemous too even if they wanted to draw jesus or moses or any other prohphet/religious figure) 8- Now, to be honest, on the other hand major hits on PORN SITES are hit by Asian/Muslim countries. Why are we not banning them. Don't we know??. 9- Many muslims are on facebook, including me, for a very long time but did we make a page Praising our Holy Prophet (PBUH) and Highlighting his noble character and beautiful teachings of Islam?? Main resource of income of social networks like facbook and etc are advertising. They get paid for the number of active users they get everyday. If you log in, they get money, if you click an advertisement, they get money, if you stay online, they get money. Its like its showing you dont trust your people, and your nation is so weak to resist temptation and evil. We have had quite a few murders in Europe over the last few years committed by muslims because of 'blasphemy' (google Theo van Gogh, for example). We can not accept this. We live in our countries where we have our rules. We have no problems with choices muslims make around the world, but we have our own choices. We want to live how we want to live. I do oppose to the whole event itself but the reaction is completely irrational. A few people are protesting on the basis of this being an Islamic country; why don't they sign up petitions for PTA to block pornography sites or other demeaning material available on the web too? Please people, by sitting on your derrieres, clicking on a single link and boycotting something as unimportant as facebook is not exactly a victory. My friends who are into photography are able to upload their work. the other friends criticise and apprecaite them, and as a result motivate them. its how one uses it. i dont exactly stay on for the whole day or long hours. its just i go there send my best friend an update who lives in us .. get to talk to my cousins who are not here, and my brother who is not in this city. thats what facebook is about, staying in touch. and yeah i am a Proud Muslim.

I would like to thank all the maulvis of Pakistan for being so narrow-minded and eveyrone else for bowing to their silly sentiments because now I am truly regretting coming back here. While we try to progress, these self-proclaimed saviours of Islam – who have done more harm to Islam than service – somehow manage to make sure that we go back to the stone ages. Rather than banning it, I believe that one should voluntarily leave or deactivate their account, if they strongly believe in it. Leave the rest of us alone. A mass deactivation on voluntarily basis would have been better! No one should be allowed to force things upon others.

We should unite together against this but banning won't get us anywhere. There a hundred countries out there using facebook, both Muslim and non Muslim. I use facebook to stay in contact with my family and friends who are not in the same city or country, or with friends whom we can't meet every day. I got in contact with friends I thought that I would never see again. It is through facebook some businesses are making their name in the industry. The people who have advertised on facebook (Pakistani companies) are being affected by this as they have invested a lot. This in turn is affecting our economy which is not exactly doing that well already. Being a proud Muslim I don’t appreciate what is happening. And I won’t say I hate facebook I rather hate the people who started this competition. And I don’t think you should use “paki”, you'r kind of being a racist. The terrorists don’t have roots in Pakistan exactly. I’d say they come from more like Afghanistan. But all of us should not forget that it was American CIA who trained the Afghanis and gave them all those weapons to fight Russia. And these people who are caught in Pakistan aren’t exactly Pakistanis , they just crossed the border without being caught. And also the militants killed in Waziristan some of them had non Pakistani passports. And one more thing if it wasn’t for facebook, none of us would have found out about the competition to start with. And we wouldn’t be having rallies against it. It’s how some of us stay connected with what’s happening in this world.

God gave everyone the right to choose, hence if people don't want to see or hear something they don't need to go to the link. By blocking Facebook, Youtube, Wikipedia etc. we are sending a message to the outside world that we are a bigoted, cowardly people who bow to pressure from extremist elements, and do not have enough faith in ourseves. What's next...will our TV channels be blocked too? Or maybe the whole world wide web! The PTA, by announcing contact numbers and email for complaints against objectionable content is reminescent of the Hitler era when people were encouraged to inform on Jews. Granted, the whole idea of this competition is distasteful, but everyone has the right of free speech....there are many hate sites on the internet, yet one doesn't hear such furor from other groups. Strangely, there has been no such response from ANY other Muslim nation......are we the self-appointed saviours of Islam? Does that make the other countries traitors to Islam? Wake up Pakistanis....you are only adding to your own woes and reiterating the notion that we hurtling toward becoming an extremist nation. Too teach them a lesson all Islamic countries have to block it permanently and demand apology from them to entire Islamic World. For hurting their religious sentiments.

waqas | 14 years ago | Reply Well it is not the metter of baning it or not. It would have been batter that the PTA should have requested pakistan to stop using FB while keeping it open. This would have been a big shock for FB and what about the companies which go over and place there adds on fb. Well the fact is this page provided many people a way to use FB, by proving the proxy links. this is sad and shows how well we do....
