Doctors' strike: More deaths, more protests

The protests that started in Punjab have had a ripple effect, with doctors in Karachi, Hyderabad joining in.

Three more patients have lost their lives during the ongoing doctor's struggle to get a salary raise. Wednesday marks day 37 of the strike.

The protests that started in Punjab have had a ripple effect, with doctors in Karachi and Hyderabad joining in protests.

The Punjab government has fired 186 protesting doctors and hired 465 new ones so far.

Patients in Multan are facing problems as wards in Nishtar hospital remain closed. On Tuesday, MS Jinnah hospital was suspended for supporting the young doctor's cause.

CM to form committee to address issue

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Wednesday said that a five-member committee will be formed to deal with the issue of Sindh doctors going on strike.

The chief minister said that the committee will include the finance minister, health minister, vice-chancellor of a university and an official from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to address the grievances.

He added that a lot of people are holding strikes on small issues and in a country which is trying to move forward, this adds a lot of hindrance to progress.

During the inauguration ceremony of a polio centre in Karachi, Shah that on the president and prime minister have ordered that the cases be dealt with urgently adding that seven million children in 20 districts will be administered with polio drops by 18,000 workers in this campaign.

Farooq Suhail | 13 years ago | Reply The young doctors’ strike in Punjab is continuing and patients are facing a lot of problems due to the longest strike by medical professionals in the history of Pakistan. Young doctors demand an increase in their salaries but the Punjab government is refusing an increase. The government has dismissed many striking doctors from their jobs due to which the doctors may take more days to call off the strike. However, in Islamabad the doctors’ strike has been called off after fruitful discussions with the government. It is expected that the Punjab government will fulfill the demands of young doctors because now the citizens of Punjab can also compel the government to help the doctors because without doctors patients suffer terribly. Punjab government must learn a lesson from central government and should not play the lives of poor patients. The PML-N must shun its stubbornness and stop playing the lives of people.

All the opportunities have been sealed for us doctors, no matter what we try we find our selves working at the lowest salaries. Oath what oath? Are doctors the only one who take oath if not then why are we expected to put it before every thing else? Didn't the president of this country took oath when he took office that he is the president of Pakistan rather then sindh? Did he not took oath to put Pakistan and its peoples interest before any? So is he following it, If no then please give us doctors a break. The sheer hypocrisy of Pakistani people is mind boggling, Doctors are some how expected to put there so called OATHs before every thing. Yet the rest can continue with their mean and selfish ways and we are expected to be selfless. Yeah right choke on your own hypocrisy you moral brigade with no morals of own. @psychked Let me tell you where those so called Seniors are. Most of them are sitting in PMDC or are working as heads/CEO's of their respective hospitals and making sure no one can come upto them and challenge their status. Just read the policies PMDC makes, you will die of shock. They are tailor made to keep those in power and close all the doors on young doctors. The amount of injustice being done to the young doctors by these so called Seniors is of monstrous proportions.

mi | 13 years ago | Reply Didn’t Docotors know the salary before joining this noble profession? When Doctors are in Medical school, they knew how much money they will be making by doing Govt jobs. But they were not counting on it, they knew the real money is in private practice. If they wanted to make more money then they should joined other profession or business (which they do by practicing privately). Why suddenly they need raise over 100%, because they know they can exploite Government by using poor and innocent people as their braganing chip. Teacher, professors and other quilified peopl make less money than less educated people in other professions, too bad they don’t have humen as their bargaing chip. We all Pakistanis seems have lost the empathy, humanity and morality. Money is our GOD now!!!

psychked | 13 years ago | Reply It seems that people are ignorant to the fact that protesting docters are all juniors. where are all the senior doctors? They can easily come in and cover for their juniors in all duties. until all demands are met. that wud be real solidarity
