Ahead of the monsoon: Arrangements to counter floods reviewed

The secretary said in order to cope floods, a risk assessment unit has also been established

LAHORE: Punjab Irrigation Secretary Captain (retd) Asadullah Khan has directed field engineers to increase patrolling on canals ahead of the monsoon season. The aim is to secure irrigation infrastructure in case of a flood.

Addressing a meeting in connection with flood management on Tuesday, Asadullah ordered field engineers to ensure all spurs are inspected well before the monsoons.

He added the enhancement of water capacity through de-silting and elimination of encroachments settled in the way of river flows. These steps were recommended by the Irrigation Department’s Safety Evaluation Cell, which was established to ensure the safety of canal system in the province.

He also directed chief engineers to personally monitor the work to safeguard spurs and bunds in their respected zones. The secretary said in order to cope floods, a risk assessment unit has also been established.
