Church protection: Govt asked to explain its stance

ISLAMABAD:

Deputy Attorney General Tariq Mehmood Jhangri was asked to submit the government’s reply on a petition filed by Pastor Nazir Masih. The pastor had moved Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday seeking police protection for the construction of Emmanuel Church in sector G-8/2.

IHC Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman directed Jhangri to submit his reply by April 12.

The petitioner, Pastor Nazir Masih had made Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairperson Imtiaz Inayat Elahi, Inspector General of Police Wajid Ali Durani, and Senior Superintendent of Police Tahir Alam Khan as respondents.

In his petition, the pastor had contended that CDA had allotted him a plot for the construction of Emmanuel Church on December 22, 2002.

Masih said that after getting the possession of the plot, he submitted the construction plan before the CDA. But the construction work had to be stopped when the pastor started receiving threats against the construction of the church.
