PESHAWAR: Gunmen riding a motorcycle ambushed a police patrol van on the outskirts of the provincial capital on Thursday evening, killing three policemen and injuring a fourth.

The policemen were on a routine patrol in the Ghaz Chowk area, which falls in the jurisdiction of Chamkani police station, when gunmen opened fire on their van shortly before iftar, SP Rural Furqan Bilal told The Express Tribune.

The Islamic State, also known as Da'ish, has claimed the responsibility for the deadly attack.

The police retaliated and took down one of the attackers, he added.

SP Bilal identified the martyred policemen as constables Itikhab Alam, Shahid and Umar Hayat. The injured head constable, identified as Shiraz, was driven to the Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where medics said his wounds were life threatening.

I demand from kpk to device a plan where they place sensors on paths leading to sensitive areas with similar laser and x-ray type cameras they use in muharam days its v imp to have that as more investment in these equipment will mean not any motor biker can come close and shoot u, what we need is continuous servillance regarless the day the month or even the year, kpk police is top and they must all get locally made bullet prove jackets and helmets lets make it part of the uniform lets call it a must once u r out in public u got to wear it not for u but for us and ur families who wait for u at home
