You'll soon be able to back up your entire computer on Google Drive

New feature will help you recreate your desktop folder system in Drive

Google Drive certainly heads the Cloud storage industry with Dropbox being its nearest competitor. Google normally has its separated cloud-based services into photos and docs for example with the diversification being responsible for a major part of Google's success.

While having no plans to change this, Google does plan to extend its Google Drive’s scope. The tech giant plans to make it a complete backup service for your computers with a new back and sync tool allowing you to back up your entire computer.



Currently, files have to be moved into the Google Drive folder for them to be synced to the cloud, but the new app will be able to back up files and photos on the desktop, in the Documents folder, in Pictures, or from anywhere else you choose.



Rather than creating entirely new folders, this tool will help you recreate your desktop folder system in Drive.

“On June 28, 2017, we will launch Backup and Sync from Google, a tool intended to help everyday users back up files and photos from their computers, so they’re safe and accessible from anywhere,”Google said in a post.

Google says it made the tool with casual Drive users in mind, so this isn't necessarily built for more complex systems that businesses tend to use.



One thing you should keep in mind is that backing up your entire computer hard drive shall take up some space on Google drive. Most users will find that the 15GB free limit would not be enough for the massive folders on our computers. You may have to pay for extra storage.

Google will debut the new feature later this month on June 28.
