ISLAMABAD: Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders (ICST) asked the government to pay special attention to the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector. SMEs were largely ignored in the latest budget despite being a major source of employment. The organisation identified lack of access to adequate and timely financing as the major bottleneck hampering growth of the sector. ICST Patron Shahid Rasheed Butt opined that SMEs have the potential to absorb the large percentage of labour force still involved in the saturated agricultural sector. He highlighted that SMEs already have 40% share in the country’s GDP and 30% share in exports, which is why it should be provided incentives to grow through policy interventions.
