KARACHI: As many as 305 shopkeepers were fined for profiteering in the city, according to a press statement from Karachi commissioner's office.

According to the press statement, crackdown against the profiteers is under way. The action against profiteering shopkeepers was taken in various areas of Karachi, which included areas of Saddar, Civil Line, Garden, SITE area, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Korangi, Baldia Town, Orangi Town, Ibrahim Hydri, New Karachi, Landhi and Model Colony.

The statement further informed that 14 profiteers were arrested during the crackdown while 14 milk sellers were fined with Rs71,000, 13 meat sellers were fined with Rs32,500 and 23 bakery owners were fined with Rs186,000.

Profiteers will not be allowed to loot and plunder the people of the port city, the statement said, adding that the commissioner's office staff monitors the auction process late night at Sabzi Mandi. Shopkeepers have been warned that they will be arrested if they do not keep the government's rate list.
