Pakistan win by 19 runs (DLS method) against South Africa

Chasing 220 to win, Men in Green were 119 for three at end of 27th over when rain interrupted the play

An all-round performance from spirited Pakistan was enough to see them earn a precious victory over world number one South Africa in Birmingham on Wednesday.

After a dismal show in their opening match against arch-rivals India, Sarfraz Ahmed-led unit produced a much better performance in the field and restricted Proteas to 219 for the loss of seven wickets after captain AB de Villiers won the toss and opted to bat first.

Chasing 220 to keep their hopes alive of qualifying to the next round, the Men in Green were 119 for three at the end of 27th over, 19 runs above the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method when rain interrupted the match, which was eventually called off as Pakistan registered two points in the tournament.

The star of the show for Pakistan was young pacer Hasan Ali and debutante opener Fakhar Zaman, who impressed in the do-or-die encounter for Pakistan.

Hasan with the ball was the pick of the bowlers, as he claimed three wickets and gave away just 24 runs in eight overs with a maiden to his name as well.

Fakhar on the other hand provided Sarfraz’s men an explosive start in his debut innings with 31 off just 23 balls with the help of six boundaries.

Pakistan will now face Sri Lanka in their last match, where they will need a win to cement their place in the semi-final.
