Two die as mercury soars to 50 degrees in DG Khan

DERA GHAZI KHAN: At least two people died while several fell unconscious due to the current heat spell in Dera Ghazi Khan on Monday. The temperature soared to 50 degrees centigrade in the district, the highest during the current season.

A police official told The Express Tribune that 35-year-old Muhammad Adeel had gone to Fareedi Bazaar for shopping. “As the heat was unbearable, Adeel fell unconscious and was shifted to District Teaching Hospital for treatment.”

However, he added, the man could not survive and breathed his last. Doctors at the hospital said the victim suffered heat stroke that resulted in his death.

Similarly, an unidentified man lost his life due to heat stroke in Choti area of the district. His body was shifted to the hospital for legal formalities.

Meanwhile, there were reports that several people fell unconscious in different parts of Dera Ghazi Khan due to the current heat wave. The doctors at Teaching Hoispital told The Express Tribune that several victims suffering from heat stroke were treated at the hospital.



They said a number of cases of those affected by heat were registered at the hospital. However, the doctors maintained the condition of the victims was not critical and many were discharged after receiving treatment.

Like other parts of the country, Dera Ghazi Khan has been witnessing harsh weather conditions. The current wave of heat spell has disrupted routine life in the region and forced people to stay indoors.

The Met department said Dera Ghazi Khan also recorded its highest ever temperature. Its previous highest temperature was 50 degrees Centigrade on June 20, 1986.

In view of the situation, Met department and district administration issued advisory to the people to take extreme measures and avoid direct exposure to Sun.

The Met officials predicted that the heat spell will continue for a few more days and the weather in most parts will remain dry.
