Indian publications rub it in Pakistan's face after humiliating defeat

NEW DELHI: Now unbeaten against Pakistan for more than three years, India on Monday celebrated a thumping win over their arch-rivals to launch their defence of the Champions Trophy.

Skipper Virat Kohli hit a blistering 81 as India thrashed Pakistan by 124 runs in a rain-affected game on Sunday at Edgbaston.

The Indian Express called the triumph the "Mother of all Mismatches" while The Times of India said it was an "opening statement" at the tournament in England and Wales.

A headline in The Hindu read "India knocks the stuffing out of Pakistan" with the newspaper calling the recent cricketing rivalry between the two neighbours as "anything but competitive".

"A record crowd provided an electric soundtrack on a frustrating wet day as India's batsmen pounded Pakistan into the ground," The Hindu wrote.

India have never lost to Pakistan in 11 World Cup and World T20 meetings over the years. They have not lost to Pakistan since the Asia Cup in March 2014 and are now locked at 2-2 in their head-to-head count at the 50-over Champions Trophy.

Riding on half-centuries by four of their top batsmen — Rohit Sharma (91), Shikhar Dhawan (68) and Yuvraj Singh (53) as well as Kohli's bash — India posted a mammoth 319-3 in 48 overs as rain interruptions left Pakistan with a revised target of 289 in 41 overs.

Pakistan never seemed to be in the chase. They finished on 164 in 33.4 overs with injured last man Wahab Riaz unable to bat in the lopsided contest.

Paceman Wahab gave away 87 runs in 8.4 overs — the most expensive figures yet in the Champions Trophy — before limping off with an injured ankle.

In all three matches Indian bowlers bowled out opponents. NZ below 190 runs, B Desh below 90 runs Pak below 170 runs. What more prove you need Indian bowlers fire power.

There are a lot of extremely gifted young cricketers in the local Pakistani cricket circuit, however they are not given a chance to progress because to be given a chance the authorities demand bribes which these poor players cannot afford. Corruption and Nepotism has ruined every aspect of Pakistani life. India use to have the same problem but they turned it around. The were prepared to make the sacrifices and now select the best only and look how they are reaping the rewards. Good luck to them for putting their house in order.

bahadurkhan | 7 years ago | Reply what is more tragic is the recent success of PSL. Challenge in ICC. Court case against BCCI. We can do better than the Indians feeling. I feel players who were banned by ICC should not not be entertained, there are thousands of fresh faces in Pakistan.

Ubaid Shaikh | 7 years ago | Reply Being a Pakistani I admit it's very embarrassing but we shouldn't deny the fact that this Pakistan side has been deprived of the basic facilities that others are getting on regular basis. Our PSL has just started and I hope we come up getting some good players from it. Shadab, Babar, Amir will definitely star in future wins for us. Till then I applaud the Indians for all their success. They wholly deserve it.

All Indian pacers were over 140 including Hardick Pandya. What good is pace if you don't have line and length. Indian pacers have swing that is enough to cause damage.

" Their speed may not be as much as pacers from other countries but their accuracy is excellent. Even in World Cup, India and NZ were two sides that consistently got their opponents out.

One of an eight year old Indian kid in my school commented, 'the best part of my weekend was when India beat Pakistan. Nothing in my life can rival that and now India is in the final.' I felt sorry for him that at such an age he is being taught to hate someone with such ferocity. I live in the West and work in school.

Going to field first was the first mistake, selecting Imad wasim was a wasteful decision, selecting out of form Wahab instead of Junaid khan was another blunder, selection of team matters thats' why losing this ICC match was not a surprise for me. Aamir needs support from either Sohail khan, Abbas or Junaid khan none was selected. Imad can be replaced with Yasir shah. Hafeez/shehzad are wasting spots as batsmen needs to be replaced with kamran akmal or other youngster. Good luck team Pakistan for upcoming matches!

But most of Indian Players averagely played 200 and more. Dhoni crossed 300+, Virat cross 200+, Yuvraj, Rohit others also played lots of International Cricket. This is my personal opinion. India and Pakistan match always breaks nerve for each player. That's why need experience players who played lots of International Cricket. Thanks.

Hamza | 7 years ago | Reply Its not the selection. Or the choice of starting XI. Nor does it have anything to do with patriotism or such ambiguities. It's about the work (or lack of) that goes on much before the first ball is bowled. Our culture, with respect to work ethic, is among the poorest in the world. Somehow, the Pakistani mindset doest not want to work hard for anything. Thus, we cannot achieve excellence in any field. But, it is easy to point fingers at our sportsmen or other public domains; ask yourself: are you doing the best job in your domain? As a student, as a small business owner, as a professional? Are you stretching the boundaries of excellence or being an armchair critic. Change the attitude towards hard work in this country, or we will become increasingly irrelevant in every domain including sports.

When hate becomes symbol of patriotism and unkown social media warriors become sources of narrative then such defeats don't change anything.

Pakistan has defeated India in Cricket lot more than Indians did to Pakistan but Pakistan never acted like this. Indian publications are doing it because they are paid by their Government to do it. India would hardly win against Pakistan but for the past some years things have changed at a rapid pace with india taking full advantage of enormous facilities being provided to them. If you look at Indian pace bowlers they are still ordinary but its just that batting is letting Pakistan down and they play under pressure.

Hockey, football, squash and wrestling need attention by the government and nation alike. The diversification would also save the nation from disappointment and resulting low national self-esteem after every cricket defeat.
