Over 830 incidents of crime reported in May

Incidents of robberies, car-lifting/snatching and crime against properties surged in May.

LAHORE: A man was shot dead and three were injured for offering resistance during a robbery bid in the month of May. The available data of registered FIRs showed that over 830 incidents of crime against property, robberies, car-lifting/snatching and motorcycle-lifting/snatching were reported.

A comparison of data showed that crime decreased slightly this month. DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf had conducted crime control meeting of all the divisions through month of May after crime increased in the city. During the meeting he suspended, issued show-cause, censure and explanation notices to dozens of SHOs for poor performance. He had ordered police officers for effective patrolling, monitoring and crime fighting measures to control crime situation.

According to the data, 179 incidents of robberies took place which means that six robberies took place each day in the month, 356 motorcycle-lifting/snatching ie 12 incidents per day, 194 burglaries, 58 car-lifting/snatching and 21 incidents of other vehicle lifting were registered in May.

During these incidents, a man was shot dead and three others were injured on offering resistance. On May 8, 70-year-old Qaiser, who worked as a cashier at a private company, was travelling in a van when unidentified suspected robbers tried to loot him in Kot Lakhpat police jurisdiction. They shot him dead when he offered resistance. On May 10, a man identified as Abdul Razzaq was shot at and injured for offering resistance during a robbery bid in Lytton Road police limits.

On May 13, a young man Kashif who was about to leave after closing his shop in Naulakha, was shot at and injured by unidentified suspects. On May 18, a security guard of a private company was shot at and injured when he tried to intercept robbers who were trying to flee after committing a robbery. Police is still clueless on all these cases.

A comparison of the data showed that Sadar Division as usual topped in crime incidents in May where at least 201 cases were registered. Out of 201 registered cases, 35 were robberies, 11 car lifting/snatching, 82 motorcycle-lifting/snatching and three other cases of vehicle lifting.

Sadar division was followed by Cantonment Division where over 170 incidents of crime against property were reported. The cases included 32 incidents of robberies, 12 car lifting, 84 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, two other vehicle lifting and 84 burglary and theft cases.

In City Division 136 cases were registered. The cases included 22 robberies, 12 car-lifting, 76 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, four other vehicle lifting and 22 burglaries.

In Model Town division a total of 115 incidents of crime against property incidents were registered. The cases included 25 incidents of robbery, six car-lifting, 48 motorcycle-lifting/snatching, seven other vehicle lifting and 29 cases of burglaries and theft were registered.

Iqbal Town division topped in cases related to robberies. As many as 37 cases of robberies were registered in the division.
