Anything that can help us get some good sleep – especially during Ramazan – is always welcome. So when we heard that better sleep can be achieved by something as simple as adding a little greenery to your bedrooms, we just had to tell you about it.

As per a study by NASA, certain plants can purify the air in our homes. Others that give of scents are known for their relaxing capabilities. As compiled from Cosmopolitan, here are eight of the best house plants which may just make you sleep a little more soundly tonight.

Areca Palm

Let’s be honest… these palms don't even need to help you sleep better to make you want them in your bedroom. But their added air purification benefits will make you rush out to the nearest nursery to get some.

The Areca Palm is even better if you suffer from regular colds or sinus trouble as they release moisture into the air which should make it easier to breathe while nodding off.

Aloe Vera

NASA named aloe vera as one of the best plants for air purification in its study. These greens release oxygen throughout the night. The bonus is that aloe vera is also super easy to look after which means more time for sleeping.

English Ivy

A study by the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology reported that English Ivy removes 94% of airborne faeces and 78% of airborne mould in just 12 hours. So, if you suffer from allergies, these beautiful plants could help curtail your sneezing at night.

Gerbera

Gerberas clean up the air in a room so breathing in your sleep is easy. Oh and they’re super cute and will brighten up the place in an instant, too.

Jasmine

Jasmine will not only make your room smell delightful but Psychologists at Wheeling Jesuit University found that those exposed to its scent also had a better quality of sleep than those who weren't.

Lavender

Speaking of relaxing scents, they don't get much better than lavender, which has been used in aromatherapy as a natural aid to sleep for years. It also has strong anti-anxiety and anti-insomnia properties. A true gift from nature, we say!

Mother-in-law's Tongue

Not only does this glossy-leaf plant emit oxygen through the night and take in carbon dioxide, it also filters nasty common household toxins like formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and benzene. Need we say more?
