PESHAWAR:
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government on Thursday approved seven development projects, costing around Rs77.9 billion – the majority of which would be financed through a World Bank loan.

According to the K-P information department, the Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) held a meeting under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary in which the seven projects were given approval.

The projects pertain to finance, agriculture, tourism, irrigation, energy & power, Auqaf and industries sectors which would be financed through an over Rs70 billion loan which the K-P government has been seeking from the World Bank’s International Development Association (IDA).

Over 300 industrial units wind up in K-P

According to sources, the K-P government has been trying to secure the Rs70 loan from the World Bank for financing its development schemes and the government has already held a meeting on the subject last year in December.

The K-P government could not get the loan for the outgoing financial year but it is hopeful to get the money in FY2017-18. “The World Bank is willing to give the loan to the K-P government for revenue generating projects which can make enough money to pay back the loan,” said an official of the K-P government.

In Energy and Power sector, the approved project is “Construction of Power Projects under IDA”. The sources said that the energy projects include the construction of three hydropower stations, 47 megawatts Barikot Patrak Hydro Power Project (HPP), 22 megawatts Patrak Shringal HPP and the 110 megawatts Gabral Kalam HPP. The three projects would cost Rs65.9 billion.
