Surgeon accusing patient's husband of threatening, manhandling him

KARACHI: A senior medical surgeon from Hyderabad has complained about receiving threats allegedly from a patient's husband and has requested the provincial government to provide him security.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Muhammad Hussain Laghari claimed that Muhammad Bux Korai, who heads a Dadu district-based non-governmental organisation, has been intimidating and maligning him. Pakistan Medical Association Hyderabad chapter's former president Dr Hadi Bux Jatoi, who accompanied Dr Laghari, also requested the government for security.



According to Dr Laghari, Korai admitted his wife, Sakeena Korai, to Rajputana hospital in a critical condition on May 18. According to him, a surgeon in Dadu had performed laparotomy, a conventional surgery to remove gall bladder, on Sakeena. However, he added, her health condition deteriorated after the operation.

Sakeena's husband admitted her to the Rajputana hospital but Dr Laghari said he referred the patient to Karachi because of 'lack of some required lifesaving facilities in the hospital'. Korai resisted the referral and tried to compel Dr Laghari to provide her treatment at Rajputana hospital. "He manhandled me and the other staff and since that day he has been threatening me," he claimed.

On his part, Korai claimed that his wife was in a stable condition when he admitted her to the Rajputana hospital. He accused the hospital for the sudden deterioration in her condition. On May 30, he went on a hunger strike and protested outside Dadu Press Club, demanding registration of an FIR against Dr Laghari and sealing the hospital, which he called a 'slaughter house'.
