KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) - Pakistan has demanded once again an independent inquiry into the 1990 Hyderabad Pucca Qila tragedy, lamenting that the case of one of the deadliest massacres in the country's history has been put on the back burner.

Talking to the media after a Quran-khawani for the victims of the incident at Bahadurabad Club on Saturday, MQM-Pakistan's deputy convener, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, said they were still looking towards the state institutions in anticipation of justice.

Around 40 people were killed in a police operation in Pucca Qila neighborhood of Hyderabad on May 26 and May 27 in 1990 while the Pakistan Peoples Party was in the government at the Centre.

Taking a jibe at his rivals for holding his party responsible for May 12, 2007, Karachi massacre, Siddiqui said that people should also raise a similar hue and cry over the Hyderabad incidents as those killed were also humans and citizens of the country.

He said that those responsible for the mayhem were roaming free and the authorities did not bother to hold them accountable for their crime. "This also raises questions on the efficiency of the judicial system in the country."

The MQM-Pakistan deputy convener said the authorities should take notice of this delay in justice to the victims of the incident. "Bring the [culprits] to justice so that the [heirs of the victims] find [some] solace that people in power consider them the citizens of this country," he said.
