Doctors across Punjab continued their strike Sunday, while unattended patients continued to suffer at hospitals across the province. A total of 22 patients have died across Punjab due to the strike.

Three more patients died in the Nishtar Hospital bringing the death toll in Multan alone to 17, while a patient died in Faisalabad in the morning after being denied medical care.

More than 700 protesting doctors have resigned so far, as the Punjab government has refused to give in to their demands.

The Punjab government has recruited 300 fresh doctors and ordered the Heath Department to issue suspension letters of striking doctors by tomorrow morning. The president of Young Doctors Association has been sacked and 60 post graduate trainees have been suspended as young doctors refuse to call off their strike.

The provincial government has also issued show-cause notices to 84 protesting medical officers. A government’s spokesperson said the sacked doctors would be barred from practising privately or in public hospitals across the province.

Sources say that senior doctors have also gone on strike to support the young doctors. Only two doctors are on duty at the Allied Hospital Faisalabad.

The General Body of the Young Doctors Association has refused to call off their strike until their demands are met.

Blood is on Shahbaz Sharif’s hands says Riaz

Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Raja Riaz said on Saturday that he would seek to lodge murder cases against Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif because he was responsible for the deaths that occurred during the ongoing doctors’ strike.

Riaz told The Express Tribune that Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) workers would collect data from each hospital about deaths during the strike. They would also reach out to families who had lost loved ones and put them in touch with party legislators to help them seek legal remedy. He said that he would visit police stations personally and seek to get cases registered against the chief minister. If the police refused, he would move the Lahore High Court, he said.

Law Minister Rana Sanaullah brushed off the threat, saying that he hoped that the opposition leader would not object if cases were registered against the federal government over deaths in federal government hospitals in the Punjab.

Blame it on Sharif

Riaz said that the escalation of the standoff between the provincial government and the Young Doctors Association was all down to Sharif. At 4pm on March 31, he said, the YDA Punjab and Senior Advisor Sardar Zulifqar Khosa had reached a deal to end the strike.

The two sides signed a agreement, Riaz said, adding that he had seen a copy of it provided to him by the YDA. He said it was agreed that the chief minister would announce the deal at 9pm that same day. Meanwhile, he said, the YDA announced that the strike was over.

But before 9pm, Riaz claimed, the chief minister was “deliberately misled” by Health Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad about the contents of the agreement. “Sharif always relies on the briefings of the bureaucracy. He thinks they are the only ones who can solve the problems of the province,” he said.

He said that a YDA Punjab delegation went to the chief minister’s officer at 90, The Mall, to meet Sharif. But when they got there, they were told the meeting had been cancelled. The YDA Punjab called Khosa, but he did not answer his mobile phone, Riaz said. Later that night, the YDA Punjab announced the resumption of their strike.

“The chief minister is very arrogant; he thinks he’s a Mughal emperor. He snubbed the YDA Punjab and because of his stubbornness, dozens of patients have died,” Riaz said. “It’s in his psyche to solve every problem through brutal police torture.”

He added that he would ask the Punjab Assembly speaker to summon the chief minister to attend a special session of the assembly on the issue.

Law Minister Sanaullah said that Riaz’s statement had “exposed those behind the doctors’ strikes” and that his party would suffer for bringing doctors into politics. He said that Riaz should not talk about the doctors, but answer questions instead about the “petrol bomb” the federal government had set off.

O,the healers!!! You work hard, you secure top positions in exams, you study day & night for 5 years in medical colleges, you make doctors. You do prolonged hours in hospitals whole heatedly but you are paid peanuts.A foot constable,a clerk or dispenser earns more salary than you at the end of the month. THAT’S A PITY.

You are treated like slaves and servants by corrupt politicians and bureacrats. You are threatened with suspensions and legal actions. You cannot compete with quacks if in private practice enjoying the patronage of corrupt government administration and politicians.

If government is bankrupt and you cannot be paid decent salaries,it’s not your problem;it’s public’s problem who elect corrupt politicians to government who in turn plunder the country.Masses need you, they ought to change themselves and elect RELATIVELY honest peolple to the government,if they want medical facilities and treatment and your total devotion to the profession.

If they cannot feed you, mind you their are heaps of opportunities in UAE and elsewhre with deent salaries. If the state fails in it’s obligations to the professionals and skilled citizens,it’s bound to lose them. Doctors are in shortage everywhre but no country treats them like yours.

Pakistan Medical Association has failed as doctor’s union.I don’t see any support for you from them so far. Professors and others in profession have not registered any support for you either for the fear of losing jobs. This means a further decline in the profession in the years to come.

On a separate note,I would urge public not to send your children to medical schools unless you can afford to send them abroad. Their lives would be ruined. They would never get what they deserve in life.Look into other avenues if you child is bright;at least you won’t see them protesting for a living.Recommend

Didn’t realize that Pakistani doctors are so stupid and lacking in both common sense and empathy. Nowhere else in the world when doctors or nurses strike, they ignore the emergency. Here in Pakistan 22 patients died already. Instead of the government, the Pakistani people should roundly condemn these so-called doctors and make sure that their demands are never fulfilled. They should all be sacked.Recommend

Shameless totally shameless and barbaric!!!! You are not young doctors but young murderers. How can you let people die in front of you? There are ways to protest for your demands. How can you ever lock up an Emergency Room? How can you do that????? You know what will happen now? One of the victims’ relatives whose whole world gets lost because of your uncivilized methods of protest will get hold of some weapon (AK47 etc.) and he will make sure to send at least a few of you to Hell non-stop. You are provoking rather converting poor people to criminals.

The right way to deal with a irresponsible chief minsiter is to for PMAto take him to court and create awarenesss in the country about this CM. If PMA is in the pockets of CM, then doctors should disband and reconstitute it. But they can’t do a wrong thing by not manning the emergency wards. YOu are compounding one mistake by another mistake. In the end you as a people are responsible for sending Sharifs to the government. If the elctoral system is broken because of captive votes (serfs captive to their feudal lords) and rigging, then you have to wait for a revolution to change the system. Those who can support you but not supporting need to take the risk and come out in the streets in yoru support. I agree that the right mode of protest is not being used by the doctors. They should take the responsible people to court and get their demands ful filled there, I see no reason to close emergency rooms etc. But has anyone asked what their demands are in any case?
Isn’t it a fact that they get paid peanuts? or is it not true that they have to suffer countless long hours and their working conditions are crazy as hell? I could on and on with listing the reasons but the people who put the blame on the doctors are just not looking at the whole picture.Recommend

We are humans too, have families to feed to, a mere reason of ‘people dying if we won’t work’ won’t make me work if you’re paying me in peanuts. I have a choice. A choice to do what I want to.

These junior doctors are the ones who are suffering not others.Senior doctors who do not support these doctors should see patients when the former group is on strike.

Als,how come bureacray will tolerate a junior doctor receiving more pay than an assisstant commissioner or ASP etc. Pakistani society in fact hates doctors.Shahbaz Sharif has a history in this regard.

I believe that all government, federal and provincial should seek other alternatives. If doctors are thinking on basis of money than government should also start taking taking decisions which provide them value for money alternatives.

The best alternative is to eliminate all doctors jobs in government hospitals and contrat out these services to private firms. And then should enforce the quality and availability of the services. The doctors under private employers of their own profession would be better managed. Moreover, a lot of them are engaged in illegal private practices, private bosses would take care of that as well.

waow what a wonderful stupid idea u gave to terminate all doctors so there ll be no govt hospitals running and hence no strike. so where would patients go? u knw they ll come to us in our private clinics and pay for their treatmen. its good idea for doctors but patients ll be suffering alot more than nw. u are truely a stupid person. govt has no alternative than to agree for our demands. problem is when they gonna give us our right. its impossible for punjab govt to replace 20000 doctors.Recommend

Countries like UK and USA has reformed health sector by contracting out these services to more efficient private sector. When doctors can come up with a strike, people and government can come up with creative solutions. Ball is in doctors’ court.

I have not suggested a thing like people should also come on streets and manage doctors themselves.

Govt should seek alternatives of employing doctors. One best solution is to hire sub-contractors who hire doctors and place them in different hospitals. This is a real-world solution. Doctors would be better managed by private bosses. The problem with government education {MBBS in govt funded schools} and government job {doing job as a part time employee and running private practices} is that people think that they deserve these, no one tries to earn these.Recommend

i am a great supporter of these young doctors and i firmly believe that they deserve a substantial raise in their pay…..just look at the inflation rate in our country and you still expect these doctors to render their valuable services for just 22 thousand rupees a month…come on ,now it’s time for our pathetic government to wake up and smell the coffee.Recommend

@Ahmed: every government educational institution spent money on their students and many of these go abroad and get settled there, why u r not raising voice against them. every government institution has employees who have got education from subsidized education system, and u may also be one of them. when people from other government institution raise voice for their rights then no one say that they should,nt raise voice as they have got eduaction from government institution. if a doctor gets subsidized education then at the same time, he himself and his family are paying taxes on which u and many others are getting subsidized education. if an employer is not paying enough to the employees then its their right to quit from job as doctors are doing. they are resigning because they are less paid but they are not barring anyone to join government sector. So you also support letting people die by not giving them medical care. There are other ways of protest.

Journalists are a community who had protested in tha past. See how they behaved. How many newspapers were not published when they were protesting?? I do not think of any. Journalists behaved as educated people.

You should not call these doctors educated ones because they havenot behaved like educated people.

People whose loved ones have died due to these butchers would never forget them. 2-3 days back there was a picture of six month old who died due to lack of treatment.

If I would have been in place of punjab government, I would have taken all steps to ensure no one dares to do these kind of barbaric acts in future. Recommend

The main issue is killing people. The people who get education from other subsidised institutions and go abroad send remittances to Pakistan from time to time. If you may have seen news overseas Pakistanis sent around 7 Billion dollars in last year. These remittances are a source of keeping Pakistan solvent.

However, the duty of doctors is different. Without any doubt doctors are the highest earning professional community in Pakistan. Off-course, these doctors need to wait and settle in first few years of their professional life.

If you consider with sincerity, doctors are responsible for deaths. More than government, because governments’ psychy is always to control things.

From thsi crisis I have come to conclusion that if you want to earn money do not waste your time in becoming a doctor. Do something else. Atleast you would not be killing people.Recommend

    @All Above

Well I just wanted to say that I’m disappointed on the comments made by fellow citizens about our profession and just to show how serious we are I submitted my resignation yesterday at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

And I would not be joining any hospital until this matter is over, I can’t support my family on 22,500 PKR/Month, I guess it’s time for me to take the offer of a foreign hospital and leave this place. Thank you all for helping me to make up my mind.

I guess moving on is a better option when my govt. and my own people ain’t gonna look after me. All they can do is criticize on us.

Have a good one everybody !.Recommend

I am not a doctor, but I work 16 hours a day. I also do not get 18,000 per month.

But I know that what I am earning now is a temporary situation. In due process of time I would start earning only thing I need to do is just wait.

Doctors are the highest earning community in Pakistan. There is no doubt in that. But you people are impatient, greedy and ruthless. You want quick money at any cost.

Government has its limitation, but just imagine the time when people would start protest against doctors. Recommend

shame on ur ridiculous comments. doctors deserve better pay bc they are heighest educated people of pakistan u cant compare them with anyone else. u dont knw hw much a doctor has to struggle in his life starting from school level u have to be always on top to be a doctor. i guess u couldnt qualify for medical college admission thats why u are against us. anyway docotors are no way heighest earning of this country. its politicians and businessmen and gangsters who earn 1000 times more than most successfull doctor. but u chose again these currupts to give them even more money. now dont tell me that govt officials are very honest and spending a simple comon man life.Recommend

@Ali: when oil price and prices of other products are raised, government has only one answer, prices are according to international market then why these people do,nt pay doctors according to international market. i know an ASP who joined police force 1 year back, his salary is 80000 thousand along with a home which certainly cost about 30000 to 40000 in civil area, vehicle along with a driver and many other facilities. i think his salary and all other benefits approaches near two lacs per month. while doctors are also given grade 17 at their induction but least paid. i do,nt talk about US or europe but even india is paying 80000 thousand rupee per month to a medical officer which is about 150000 pakistani rupees. is it not injustice. doctors did, nt resigned all of a sudden, they started movement two years ago by wearing only black strips during their working hours. but no one to notice it. they protested on road, they did negotiatiations with government but no result. then they discontinued their services from OPD but no one to notice. it was the duty of civil society to raise voice for doctors so that they could do their duties in hospitals but if u people do,nt have such sense then what to do?Recommend

A lot of MBBS physicians (it is pertinent to note that MBBS are not eligible to be called doctors; only M.D. are eligible to be called doctors) join CSS.

You telling the starting salary of an ASP, what about comparison between retirement salary of an ASP and a Physician. Off course, you will not raise points which do not go in your favour. That is true fact of bigoted physicians.

None of your logics and reasoning can justify killing innocent. I cannot understand why people forget that they are also suppose to die one day because death is an undenieable reality.

After looking at comments of common people and doctors’ responses, I can only say one thing:

Bhans ke aage bein bajanay ka koi faida nahin. Here Bhans means these physicians.Recommend

Up until now in this Great Nation of ours, patients died in hospitals because of lack of medicine. Today however, patients are dying not because of medicine, but because our government simply can’t afford doctors in their hospitals. Asking us to go there and save people is like asking us to work for charity, which we have been doing for the past so many years. Something else the media should know is that We havent closed off the hospital doors, the hospitals are already open, the government, just needs to fill them with doctors.Recommend
