Mehreen Ahmad remains in critical condition at Royal Perth Hospital

Pakistani-American student Mehreen Ahmad was found unconscious, lying in a pool of her own blood in the stairway of an apartment building in Perth last week.

According to Yahoo7 NewsMehreen, who had moved to Australia two years ago to study primary school teaching, was allegedly bashed in the head by a guy she had been introduced to the same night, Eduardo Santos Abrahao Filho.

Returning to her apartment after a night out with friends, Mehreen's friends claimed the victim did not return after leaving to get cigarettes. Details of the incident still remain unclear as investigations continue.

Ahmad, who's in her 30s, was taken to Royal Perth Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

According to Perth Now, the suspect, who was arrested by the police a day later, has been remanded in custody until June 7 after appearing in Perth Magistrates Court on charges of “grievous bodily harm”.

Also present at the court hearing was Mehreen’s close friend, Filho’s brother and a bunch of friends. "Our hearts and prayers go out to Mehreen's family and we are praying for a speedy recovery for her," said Ami, a friend of Filho’s.

Meanwhile, Mehreen’s parents’, who flew in from Dubai to take of care of her, released a statement on Tuesday, thanking the hospital staff.

"Mehreen has been through an extremely traumatic experience which should not have happened and one which no person should have to endure," the family said. "We will be by her side as she fights to recover."
