Rising incidents of drowning

Letter May 25, 2017
Citizens too need to act more conscientiously

KARACHI: Over the past two weeks, there has been constant news in media of people drowning while swimming at different beaches in Karachi. According to the news reports, at least 18 people have drowned in the past 10 days, out of which four were school students. This is quite shocking.

Most beaches in the city have lifeguards seated at locations that are easy to reach in case of emergencies. However, these rescuers are really small in numbers to cover the beaches spread across miles. And on top of that no real efforts have been made in the past or, in fact, are being made to increase the strength of coastguards despite the surging number of fatalities that occur every year. There is a dire need to rectify this and secure one of Karachi’s most frequented recreational place.

On the other hand, citizens too need to act more conscientiously. Everyone is, perhaps, well aware of the fact that the months of May, June and July are the most dangerous for swimming as Section 144 against swimming in the sea is imposed every year. Yet, we constantly violate it and pay for it with the cost of our own lives. Instead of only criticising the authorities concerned, we should also start being more responsible for our actions.
