Pakistan drowning in corruption

Letter May 24, 2017
Pakistan cannot prosper, until and unless the roots of corruption are eliminated

SHIKARPUR: It is believed by businessmen, policymakers and analysts of the world that a state can never develop by having serious, provocative, despicable and sensitive matters at home. One of the major issues that impede a country from advancing is corruption.

Corruption creates many other gruesome problems in a state and Pakistan has been hit hard by it. In Pakistan, corruption is like a cup of tea whose one sip supposedly makes your wealth strong. Living a luxurious lifestyle, having regular dinners at five-star restaurants and trying to multiply their wealth every day are the activities our so-called political leaders indulge in. Despite having many allegations of corruption, they claim to be honest, trustworthy and true Pakistanis. But in reality, they have never even tried to be honest in working towards the prosperity of their homeland.

All hopes of finally seeing an end to corrupt leaders of the country also seem to be doomed. A few weeks ago, the apex court kept meeting to decide the fate of the longstanding Panama case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. After the 56-day-long unbearable wait, the 3-2 decision of the Supreme Court saved the sitting prime minister from disqualification. Now a Joint Investigation Team will announce the judgment within 60 days.

Pakistan cannot prosper, until and unless the roots of corruption are eliminated. For the country that is hit by corruption, the laws against such looters must be strict and punishable if the shackles of corruption are to be rooted out.
