WAPDA employee attempts suicide in front of SC

In application, man says he could not pay bribe for his transfer

ISLAMABAD: An employee of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) attempted suicide in front of the Supreme Court on Thursday ostensibly after he failed to get justice.

The employee stood in front of the main gate of the apex court and slit his wrist with a sharp weapon.

When people and officials standing nearby saw the blood streaming from his wrist, they rushed over and tied it up using makeshift tourniquets.

Police said that he was immediately rushed to the hospital where he received three to four stitches to his wrist. Later, Secretariat Police Station filed an FIR
against the employee for attempting suicide under section 325.  He was later moved to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

According to Secretariat police station SHO Muhammad Asaf, the man was an employee of WAPDA and hailed from Hub in Balochistan. He was currently deputed in the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO).

In his application addressed to the Supreme Court Chief Justice, he said that his wife was a teacher but because of his job he was separated. When requesting a transfer, he claimed that his superiors were demanding a bribe of Rs150,000 – an amount which he could
not afford.

The IESCO employee further stated in his application that he wanted justice.
