Power outages and the heatwave

Letter May 12, 2017
The government of Pakistan has to deal with this issue

KARACHI: This summer the country is bracing for a long and torrid spell of heat. On top of that, people face the prospect of long hours of power cuts. In the last two years, more than 1,000 people lost their lives in the heatwave. A similar outcome can be expected especially owing to the power cuts that have become the fate of the country. People living in urban areas experience 8-10 hours of power outages, while the population in the rural areas face over 15-16 hours daily.

The government of Pakistan has to deal with this issue and draw up counter-measures immediately because the power cuts can lead to fatalities at a time when the temperatures are soaring.
