Virus is transmitted from one human to another by the bites of infected female mosquitoes

CHITRAL: I want to draw attention to the fast-spreading threat of Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne viral disease in our cities and towns. Chikungunya is derived from a word in the Kimakonde language, meaning “to become contorted”, and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain.

Common signs and symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue, rash and joint pain, which usually lasts for a few days or may be prolonged to weeks. Chikungunya has been identified in over 60 countries of Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas.

The virus is transmitted from one human to another by the bites of infected female mosquitoes. The mosquitoes involved are identified as Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
