To Gwadar and Turbat: Senators meet Zikri community elders

Community assured of support over their problems

TURBAT: Members of the Senate Committee on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) on Thursday called on the Zikri community in their walled abode in Balochistan’s Turbat district and assured the community elders of their support.

Senators visiting the area included PPP’s Dr Karim Khawaja and Farhatullah Babar, ANP’s Daud Achakzai, PkMAP’s Usman Kakar and National Party’s Mir Kabir Shahi They were accompanied by the district nazim Turbat.

Zikri leader shot dead in Kech

The elders of the Zikri community took the senators to their place of worship, shelter houses for the pilgrims and the sacred Koh-e-Murad where devotees perform pilgrimage. The visiting senators were also apprised of the difficulties facing the beleaguered community.

The senators assured the community members of their support in alleviating their problems. The elders appreciated the gesture and thanked the lawmakers.

Zikri community – a minority group founded by Syed Muhammad Jaunpuri in India in the late 15th century – has largely been ostracised and excluded. It has lived under siege and threat of extremist elements in the last decade.
