Fruit exporters criticise PHDEC closure
The horticulture export contributed $641 million in fiscal year 2015-16
KARACHI:
Fruit exporters have criticised the Ministry of Commerce’s decision to close Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Company (PHDEC). “I don’t know why the government was in a haste to close PHDEC. The organisation should have been restructured to increase its efficiency instead of being shut down,” said Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Standing Committee Regional Chairman on Horticulture Exports Ahmad Jawad. There is still a lot of room for improvement in horticulture export but for that the government needs to come up with proper policies, he added. The horticulture export contributed $641 million in fiscal year 2015-16. According to Jawad, the ministry decided to close PHDEC on its poor performance and the decision in this regard was taken on Tuesday. PHDEC did not receive due attention from its parent ministry during the last four years.
