BAHAWALPUR: A police constable was shot dead while another was injured when gunmen opened fire on them in Khanpur early Tuesday.

A police official told The Express Tribune Police Constables Muhammad Jameel and Liaquat Ali were on their way home after performing duty on the eve of Shab-e-Meraj when unidentified outlaws opened fire on them. He added, “Several bullets hit Jameel and as a result, he was killed on the spot while Liaquat suffered injuries.”

The official maintained the deceased and injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment and legal formalities. He said, “The condition of the injured is critical.”

After the incident, police reached the spot and gathered evidence from the crime scene.

Meanwhile, the martyred policeman’s funeral prayers were held later in the day in Police Lines, Khanpur. Government and police officials attended the funeral.
