Consequences of smoking sheesha

Letter April 25, 2017
The government should look into the matter at their earliest

KARACHI: After the habit of cigarette smoking, youngsters are moving towards sheesha cafes. Flavoured nicotine is prepared in a glass water pipe that is often known as the modern hookah. Many boys and girls are seen spending their time at sheesha cafes at the cost of their education, as they bunk classes and visit cafes instead for ‘fun’. Despite the government proposing a ban on sheesha at public places, such as cafes, these places are still functional.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an hour-long session of smoking sheesha equals the consumption of 100-200 cigarettes, divided among the number of people sharing it. As a result, not only is smoking sheesha unhygienic but the consequences of smoking a modern hookah are much greater than a single cigarette. Present in posh localities, sheesha cafes are open for long hours without any fear. The government should look into the matter at their earliest and help restrict them for the betterment of our youth.
