Precautions against heat stroke

Letter April 23, 2017
It is important to stay hydrated by frequently drinking water

KARACHI: A severe heatwave with temperatures as high as 49°C struck southern Pakistan in June 2015, causing the deaths of about 2,000 people from dehydration and heat stroke. It also claimed the lives of zoo animals and countless livestock.

This year too, the heatwave is said to be severe with the heat rising up to 40°C. To prevent fatalities, I appeal to the authorities to arrange water dispensers and shaded resting areas for people at a distance of two kilometres. Moreover, it is important to stay hydrated by frequently drinking water. Wear light-coloured and lightweight clothing, and avoid going outdoors unnecessarily.
