The first day of the Army Polo Championship 2011 saw 4 Corps prevail 11-5 over a weak 5 Corps team at the Malir Garrison Polo Club.
The tournament, featuring six teams, is being played on a half-league system on the lines of the Pakistan Polo Association rules with all matches played over four chukkars.
In the first match, 4 Corps defeated the opposition even after 5 Corps were given a four-goal advantage as compensation for their weaker team. Omar Minhas shone for 4 Corps, scoring six goals and wiping out the deficit alone. Tariq Abdullah Niazi chipped in with three goals as 5 Coprs scored a solitary goal to finish with five for the match.
The second fixture was a keenly-contested affair between the 10 and 11 Corps, with the latter enjoying a two-goal handicap. However, 10 Corps still managed an 8-5 win with Haseeb Minhas scoring 5 goals.
In the third chukkar, Rab Nawaz Tiwana and Asif Manzur were unfortunate when their horses were involved in a collision after which both were taken to the hospital. The first encounter today will be between 2 and 5 Corps with the second match featuring 11 and 31 Corps.
