RAWALPINDI: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was in the lead in the PA-23 (Chakwal-IV) by-elections.

The seat had fallen vacant in February this year after the death of ruling party MPA Malik Zahoor Awan.

A close contest is expected between the PML-N candidate Malik Shehryar Awan, nephew of Zahoor Awan, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PIT) candidate Colonel (retired) Sultan Surkhru.

Other candidates included Dr Ali Hassan Naqvi of the Pakistan Peoples Party, Malik Adnan Latif of Pakistan Sunni Tehrik, and independents Malik Jamil Awan, Nasir Bhatti, and Maqsooda Begum.

However, the real contest was expected between the PML-N and the PTI candidates who was supported by the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid, the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Pakistan Awami Tehrik.

The contest had become intriguing after PTI Chairman Imran Khan and PML-N’s Hamza Shahbaz visited the constituency and addressed their respective supporters.

Polling started at 8 am and the voting process remained peaceful overall except for some scuffles between supporters of the PTI and the PML-N.
