KAISERSLAUTERN:

A Miroslav Klose double gave Germany a big push towards Euro 2012 qualification, as they trounced minnows Kazahkstan 4-0 at home to keep their unbeaten record in Group A.

The goals have brought Klose to within seven goals of the German record currently held at 68 by legendary striker Gerd Muller. And the 32-year-old marksman said he was bent on catching and even passing the man known in his heyday as “The Bomber.”

“Now that I am so close, naturally I want to move past him,” said Klose after winning his 107th cap in the Euro 2012 qualifier.

“I have already spoken to Muller about it and he told me he wouldn’t be angry with me if I take away his record.”

The win sent Joachim Loew’s side eight points clear of the chasing pack in Group A, with Belgium, Austria and Turkey all seeking to close the gap tomorrow.

Kazahkstan remain point-less and goal-less at the bottom of the group.

Keane lifts Irish into contention

Meanwhile, Ireland moved joint top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group B after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Macedonia in Dublin.

Following Russia’s scoreless draw in Armenia, and Slovakia’s 1-0 victory in Andorra, the Irish win put the trio level on 10 points.
