Balochistan bans use of plastic bags

Ban will be effective from May 15

Balochistan Assembly passed a resolution to impose a complete ban on the sale, use, and production of plastic bags in order to protect the environment and to also make efforts to find substitute products.

The provincial Environment Protection Agency director-general issued an official notification on Saturday banning the use and production of plastic bags all over the province, renewing the department's efforts to implement the ban in more effective manner and in the interests of defending the environment and the public health.

The ban will be effective from May 15.

The resolution, moved by Adviser to the Chief Minister on Information Sardar Raza Mohammad Bareech, was unanimously approved by the House.

According to sources, government officials are holding consultation with plastic bag producers, convincing them to adopt more environment-friendly bags for daily use. The producers have reportedly agreed to switch over to new products using better chemicals from European countries, mainly from German to meet the growing demand.

Levelling fine on traders and businesses that fail to comply is under consideration to discourage resisting the ban and secret use of plastic bags.
