Rangers take nine suspects into custody in Karachi raids

Three NADRA employees also held for issuing CNICs to illegal immigrants

KARACHI: As many as nine suspects, including political workers, were apprehended during ongoing targeted raids and operations in different parts of the metropolis on Saturday.

Rangers officials said the suspects arrested were involved in targeted killings, extortion and land-grabbing cases.

Meanwhile, three employees of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) were also arrested by the police for allegedly issuing Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) to illegal immigrants.

Two suspects were taken into custody during separate raids within the limits of the Sharae Noor Jahan police station and Pirabad area of District West. The suspects were later identified as Siddiq alias Farhan and Muhammad Azam. The Rangers spokesperson claimed the arrested men belonged to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) - London. The suspects have been involved in various cases of crime, including target killings, extortion, land-grabbing, wall-chalking and facilitation of criminals, the paramilitary spokesperson said.

Three more suspected criminals were arrested during targeted raids conducted in Nazimabad and Pakistan Bazaar areas of the city. They were identified as Syed Bilal, Kashif and Asad Iqbal. According to the Rangers spokesperson, the men were involved in various cases of robberies.

Meanwhile, four suspects were apprehended during raids in Darakshan and Gadap areas of the metropolis. The suspects were identified as Ghulam Sarwar, Asif, Akbar and Ali. The Rangers spokesperson said the men were drug peddlers.

The Rangers spokesperson also claimed to have recovered arms, ammunition and narcotics from their possession. The suspects were handed over to the police for further questioning.

NADRA men arrested

In another raid, the police arrested three NADRA employees. The arrests were made by the Site B-Section police.

The employees, identified as Shahid, Sohail and Anwar, were accused of issuing CNICs to illegal Afghan immigrants in Karachi. Police officials said the arrested employees were serving at NADRA's Haroonabad centre.

The men were arrested after police received information about them being involved in issuing CNICs to illegal immigrants and helping the immigrants in making passports, said the police.

A case was registered against them while further investigations are underway.
