ISLAMABAD: The spouse of Nawab Ali Laghari, a ‘missing’ aide of PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, has alleged her husband might be in illegal confinement of the interior secretary.

“The petitioner is apprehending that her husband is in illegal confinement of respondent Number 3 [secretary interior],” petitioner Badran, wife of Nawab Ali Leghari, alleged in a petition submitted before the Islamabad High Court.

Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani issued on Monday notices to the secretary interior, inspector general of Islamabad police and station house officer Lohi Bher police station asking them to submit their replies by April 24.

On April 4, the counsel said, that the plaintiff along with her husband and children were in their house when some people knocked on the door and identified themselves as ‘government officials’. The petitioner added that Leghari along with his cousin were asked to produce their computerised national identity cards (CNICs).

Subsequently, she said, they picked Leghari and threw him inside their vehicle and took him away.

The counsel said that the petitioner went to the Lohi Bher police station but the SHO initially refused to register an FIR for the case. Later, she said, he registered the FIR after the matter was highlighted in the media.

The petition stated that Leghari is still missing as his whereabouts are still not known to the family.

The counsel prayed the court to direct the IGP to recover and produce Leghari before the court and hand him over to his family.
