LAHORE: Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), while resetting its priorities, is executing eight mega projects on a fast track with cumulative power generation capacity of more than 10,000 megawatts and gross water storage capacity of 10.6 million acre feet (maf).

“These projects will go a long way in meeting the increasing requirements of water and electricity in the country,” said Wapda Chairman Lieutenant General (Retired) Muzammil Hussain at a consultative seminar at the Wapda House on Monday.

The seminar was held to gather valuable input of former chairmen of the authority in order to give a much-needed fillip to ongoing efforts for timely completion of the projects and effective water management and hydroelectric power generation.

The event was attended by former Wapda chairmen Lieutenant General (Retired) Zahid Ali Akbar, Shamsul Mulk, Lieutenant General (Retired) Zulfiqar Ali Khan, Tariq Hamid, Shakil Durrani, Syed Raghib Abbas Shah and Zafar Mahmood.

Sharing his vision for the development of water and hydroelectric power resources, the Wapda chairman pointed out that a three-pronged strategy had been devised which included completion of under-construction projects in the shortest possible time, initiation of work as early as possible on projects that were ready for construction and making Wapda yet again a vibrant organisation.

In line with the strategy, three power projects - Neelum-Jhelum, Tarbela 4th Extension and Golen Gol with generation capacity of 2,485MW - will be completed between the end of 2017 and mid-2018.
