Quaid-e-Azam Library: security and rules

A step taken by the library to bar students from carrying shoulder bags inside library is a case in point

Letter April 01, 2017

LAHORE: Pakistan, a country where the rate of literacy is embarrassingly low, the authorities have left no stone unturned in creating huge troubles for students. A recent step taken by the Quaid-e-Azam Library to bar students from carrying shoulder bags inside library is a case in point. As the library is located in Bagh-e-Jinnah, the students have to go through a security check. Authorities have already placed a metal detector at every gate of the park. A person has to show his CNIC to go inside.

Moreover, earlier students had to get their bags checked at reception before entering and after leaving the library for security purposes. But nowadays one has to take his books and accessories in hand while leaving an empty bag outside the library. Ironically, after passing through several security checks what compels authorities not to let the students take their bags inside the library. Unfortunately, while non-members are often restricted from visiting the library, foreign nationals, models, film producers and newly married couples are warmly welcomed inside. The library administration itself appears to entertain them. Last week, owing to this, there was a six-hour long disturbance because of commercial filming inside the library. I hope the authorities concerned remove these obstacles so that students make most of the library.
