PESHAWAR: Minister of state and chairperson of the Benazir Income Support Programme Marvi Memon has been conferred the Speaker's Democracy Award by UK House Of Commons Speaker John Bercow.

The Speaker's Democracy Award is an internationally focused award which aims to celebrate individuals who through their leadership and personal courage have made an outstanding contribution to development of democratic societies, said a release issued on Thursday.

The award seeks to recognize individuals who have contributed to the development of democracy in broadest sense and encompasses any aspect of country's democratic settlement including human rights, free speech, rule of law, transparency and anti-corruption campaigning.

Memon was nominated by MP Alex Salmond and won this award after tough competition with nominees from all across the globe. The judges appreciated her outstanding performance in BISP to empower over 5.3 million women by giving them access to unconditional quarterly support stipend.
