GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) police decided to construct a memorial to honour SSP Hilal Ahmer who was assassinated while probing the murder of foreign mountaineers on Nanga Parbat in 2013.
“The monument will be a sort of acknowledgement of the sacrifices rendered by the brave officer,” Mubarak Jan, a spokesman for G-B police told The Express Tribune on Tuesday.
Jan said the decision was taken on Tuesday during a high level meeting chaired by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Sabir Ahmed, who is set to become new police chief in G-B. The meeting was attended by all senior police officials from all 10 districts of the region.
The meeting also decided not to promote any police officers who fail the departmental training courses, the spokesman said.
Regarding the late SSP, Jan reminded, was one of the three officials killed in an ambush in the remote northern town of Chilas, headquarters of Diamer district, in August 2013. The investigation team was probing the Nanga Parbat massacre. In addition to that, the DIG asked the officers to purge the region of illegal weapons which it is feared could threaten the peace any time, said the spokesman.
The new Regional Police Officer DIG Ahmed is the acting IGP following transfer of the ex-IGP Zafar Iqbal Awan. DIG Ahmed, apart from illegal weapons, appeared to be equally concerned over use of drugs by the youngsters ordered crackdown against the drug peddlers. “Do launch a drive against the curse,” he told the senior police officers present in the meeting.
The implementation of National Action Plan was also discussed in the meeting with emphasis to speed up action against terrorists and extremists.
