ABBOTTABAD: A miner was killed when a part of a mine collapsed on him in Abbottabad, police said on Thursday.

The incident comes days after two labourers had been killed in Ghazi Tehsil of Haripur while mining sand.

Eyewitnesses told Sherwan police that on Wednesday afternoon three labourers were busy repairing a soapstone mine, owned by Aftab Mining Company in Chalaitar village when a heavy mass of soapstone fell on them burying one of the miners alive. The two other miners, however, escaped unhurt.

They rushed to inform other miners who launched a rescue effort on self-help basis. However, they could not dig out the body of their colleague till the early hours of Thursday.

The dead miner was later identified as Khani Zaman, a resident of Mansehra.

Police have started an inquiry whether sufficient safety measures were provided to the miners or not.
